Winter Fly Fishing in the Heber Valley

Only minutes from Sundance and Park City, the Provo offers great Winter fishing.

Utah is not just for skiing!

Many anglers are surprised to find out that our local rivers fish well 365 days of the year. The Provo River is a “tailwater river”, meaning it comes through a dam, and therefor does not freeze. This makes fly fishing a great activity to add to your “ski” vacation. It is also an opportunity to see the gorgeous Heber Valley during what most consider to be the prettiest season. This time of year can feature great dry fly fishing, and also solid nymph fishing as the bugs are starting to hatch.

Take a ski vacation break and chase big rainbow trout!

Take a break from the slopes and head down to the river!

When the temperature drops in Park City and Heber area, the fishing heats up. Our local guides know that some of the best fishing of the year can be found through the less fished months. The Provo River features fantastic midge and mayfly hatches through the Winter and early Spring. These bugs bring some of the larger fish in the river to the surface and can provide hot fishing through our colder months.

When do we fish?

Our guides focus on the most productive time of the day during the Winter and Spring fishing season. This means you don’t have to be on the river at the crack of dawn but will actually be better off starting in the late morning. The most pleasant part of the day is often the most productive this time of year!

It is said that there is no such thing as poor weather, just poor clothing. Anglers who dress for the Winter and Spring weather will have the best time. This means THICK socks, warm pants, and a few layers on top. If you dress like you’re going skiing, you will be in great shape!
